Dr Paul Rose, ISHRS Annual Meeting - Hair Restoration Discussions

The ISHRS just held it’s annual meeting. The meeting took place in Las Vegas. During that meeting he presented three lectures, directed the hairline workshop and demonstrated the use of FIT/FUE in a live surgery demonstration.

Dr Paul Rose’s lectures included the presentation of his new Rose SL punch for FIT. This punch produces lower transection rates and by allowing for better alignment and a reduced cutting surface. During the liove surgery session this punch was utilized as well as a standard punch and the Harris safe punch. While only a small number of grafts was required for this eyebrow case the transection rate was zero with the punch.

Speaking about strip harvesting techniques and obtaining donor tissue Dr Rose presented his latest version of the tissue spreader. This device allows fro separation of the tissue with after making a partial depth incision. This produces less trauma to the tissue and less transection of the hair follicles. This results in a grater yield of grafts per unit of tissue.

Lastly Dr Rose directed a workshop on hairline design. He spoke about his views about critical aspects of the hairline in relation to the normal hairline characteristics. Specifically he discussed the need for an undulating hairline, gradient density, proper use of hair caliber based on area transplanted, irregular positioning of follicular units.

Also of interest there were several lectures concerning the use of low level light lasers for hair growth. In these lectures the use of a laser did not demonstrate clinically significant improvement. There was data to show that there were some increases in hair count but again not clinically apparent. This data is interesting as there are many devices now out in the market claiming marked hair growth.

It seems that there is much to learn about the use of the LLL-Lasers. One area of concern is that previous studies demonstrating efficacy have only been six month studies. It is felt that longer term studies are needed.

One study by Dr Perez showed limited benefit to wound healing at the donor closure in strip harvesting. This benefit was apparent for the first few days but was no better than non use of the laser after that time. Total time for wound healing was unchanged. The study was subjective and based on patient perception of pain, discomfort and swelling.
